Human-Wildlife Conflict Prevention
Africa is home to some of the most magnificent and most dangerous large mammals in the world. Since most of these wildlife populations range outside of protected areas, their conservation depends on a peaceful coexistence within village lands. However globally, human-wildlife conflict is on the rise and nowhere is this problem more prominent or likely to escalate than among the large human and wildlife populations of East Africa.
Building upon 6 years of experience working with Maasai communities and wildlife in northern Tanzania, APW’s unique approach empowers local villagers to target problem areas, to assess and monitor conflicts, and to develop socially appropriate, local solutions to human-wildlife conflicts.
Highlight – APW’s Program to Prevent Lion-Livestock Conflict
Using our unique, citizen science approach, APW has helped local villagers to record and evaluate the effects of large carnivore attacks on their livestock. Now, the results of their work are being used to implement preventative strategies that keep both lions and Maasai cattle safe, a win-win for people and wildlife alike.
